1600’s Hearth Tax

The next step is to look into the hearth tax records of Surrey to find household members.

Hearth tax is a record of taxes taken for the king. It was divised on the basis of the size of the household and would often contain names of all the family members.

I found a poll tax registry record attached to Robert Lock in 1705 which listed something called ‘Hundred : Tandridge’. I didn’t know what this meant at the time, but save the record.

As I was searching in the National Archives for Hearth Tax records, I found that it was referring to a particular area of Lingfield, Surrey. This made it easy to begin my search of the national archives for possible locations of information.
